One year...

my grandma's birthday (i'm pregnant with emily in this photo)

i can't believe it's been one year since my grandma died.  it's been one year and one week since i've looked into her eyes, held her hand, heard her voice (although, i hear her "hello hello love" in my head often...i'm so thankful), smelt her perfume on my clothes after a long hug...  the year has passed.  there are no more 'firsts' without her.  although, as the kids grow up, there will always be the firsts that she'll miss in that way...
death is so final.  i know that sounds utterly redundant.  but it is.  i miss her.  we were so close.  i saw her almost every weekend of my life for 32 years.  and the loss of her is very significant.  we were a small family prior to her death, but now...we are even smaller.  it's just my mother, father, sister and i now.  the kids and ryan add SOOO much, but that is really it.  my dad has no family left and my mother's family lives a bit away-although we keep in touch, it's just not the same.
here is a link to a slideshow of her life that we had done for her memorial service last year.
life does go on...and grief does continue...it's hard though.  it's hard to grieve a grandparent, i've discovered.  i sometimes feel as though i need to explain myself...as if to qualify to people why i am still so sad.  there are just some moments that come up (like in class last week, we had two people loose their grandmas and their stories of them brought up memories and grief in me to the point i had to leave class to go cry) that you can't supress and you need to grieve in that moment.  but explaining that to people is hard because not everyone is close to their grandparent.  she was almost like another mother to me.  and i also don't want to supress my pain entirely either.  i have a friend who tragically lost their son in november to a horrific disease.  she remarks that people expect you to move on, to have a happy ending and be a neat little package again, because they themselves don't know how to respond to grief.  is life really like that?  i find life to be happy and completely complicated all in the same moment sometimes!  i have so very much appreciated my friends words on her own pain in loss because it is as though it gives me permission to feel the pain i feel.
blogging about it has helped this evening.  we are going to visit grandma tomorrow, put some fresh flowers on her and my grandfathers site...i pray that we can grieve as a family.  we are very much a family of individual emotions.  not often do we share our pain in one anothers presence, we sort of go cry on our own and come back to one another all dried up and fixed.  i pray we can talk about her tomorrow...laugh...cry...just be how we need to be tomorrow with each other.
i'm sure there is so much more to still process...i feel as though i have been processing this whole year.  i'm grateful for life, that it can be complicated and layered and full.  and i am so thankful to have lived 32 years of my life knowing my grandma, virginia jane gordon.

Tag, i'm it!

Thanks Jenna...here are my responses to the blog tag:

What was I doing 10 years ago...
planning a wedding!  I was 7 months away from being Mrs. Low (man, its already been 10 years!). I was freaking out because I had just completed two years of Biola with student loans (which we are still paying off...one down, one to go...then off to the grad school loans!) and decided I didn't want to be a school teacher.  So, after a cry-fest in Ry's old white civic, we decided that I'd just keep working at the law firm I was working at at the time (AWG), move to full time if I could, and put Ry through the rest of his time at Talbot.

Things on my to-do list:
Um...I don't think I have enough space!  Finish my faculty Talbot Application, finish 6 books by May 30th, write a case study...okay...enough school stuff...fun to do list-re-do our backyard, re-arrange and decorate our bedroom (we've never done it!) and plan Ry's birthday.  oh...and to concur with Jenna-to finish a Jane Austin novel in it's entirety!

Bad habits-nail biting (although...i've not done it in 6 weeks!), concerned with people pleasing, shopping (we have NO money...I should not shop...but I just can't help myself...we should start a clothes sharing campaign!  rotate wardrobes with friends every two months!)  and procrastination (or is it just being tired because of having two children under 4 while in grad school full time and in full time live-in ministry?!?!)

Places I've lived-fullerton, ca-placentia, ca-Newport Beach, ca-Orange, CA-La Mirada, CA.  all with in 10-30 min of each other.  I'm pretty local...I lived in Brazil for 2 1/2 months one summer, does that count?

Things most people don't know about me:
um...I guess I'll use my friend Jen's comment about me today-i like hard boiled eggs, but just the whites, not the yoke.  I like the yoke when scrambled or over easy, just not hard boiled.
what else...

I LOVE architecture...it lights me up inside being in old homes, structures, modern complexes...I think it's beautiful.

I love the outdoors and feel a peace from the Lord when laying under trees that is just overwhelming.  I love His creation!

I am dairy intolerant although I can't seem to ditch it totally because of my complete LOVE of all things italian...I worked at a Law firm for about 8 years.  I got the job from my boyfriend at the time and worked there till 2001.

When I walk into a home I see what it could become-how it can be re-arranged, painted, landscaped...my head just spins when i'm in homes. I love design.

But, I also LOVE the design of the soul and how to be present to people to hear their hearts and show them how the Holy Spirit can minister to them and show them the grace of Jesus...

we've lived in a college dorm with over 200 students for almost 8 years.  and i've loved it.

oh...and i'm actually introverted and love having alone time.

okay...anyone else want to cut and paste this, have at it!

more photos : )

Scot (of of our RAs)  got this for Em on his trip to Maui...she thinks she's the little mermaid!  i love that her imagination is just so large : )

spring break

ahhhh!!!! it is finally spring break for me as of 4pm today. after a day of meetings, class and more meetings, i got home, we packed up the kids and we shooby-doobied down to rubies to enjoy dinner out and a huge sundae to celebrate spring break. although i have 4 books to read and 3 to journal about...oh and i tiny 1 pg. paper....oh wait, three papers (one is a case study, how do you write a case study??!!) at least i have some time to be productive and get things done.

any one have access to a free cabin/beach house/house that is not in the vicinity of biola? sort of need to get off campus for a few days with the fam. do you have plans for easter/break? do you get a break?

anything else that is up with us...um...will is totally into trains right now. i just love watching him turn into a little boy although i miss my little babe. tomorrow marks his 2nd official hair cut...sigh...we get to go with my dear friend heather and her two cuties to boogaloo's in downtown fullerton. i love that place! what a way to kick off spring break, a lazy morning breakfast with the kids, downtown with friends and probably the park for lunch. i love it.

that's it for now. ry is watching lost while i stay out of the room...due to school i've (with great sadness) ditched lost for a few weeks so i need to get caught up before i can watch tonights episode.

rejoice my friends, as we celebrate the Risen King.
